SongHub is an offline karaoke-style app for Android phones, tablets, and Android/Google TV. It plays MIDI and KAR song files with on-screen lyrics, uses soundfont (.sf2) files for instrument sound, and can show background videos or photos while you sing. It does not stream commercial music catalogues and is not an MP3 pirate downloader.

This guide covers what the app does, official install source, folder setup, MIDI vs KAR, soundfonts, background media, TV use, and legal song-file options.

What SongHub does

  • Plays .mid and .kar files with lyrics display
  • Works fully offline once files are on the device
  • Uses .sf2 soundfonts for instrument playback
  • Background videos (BGV) or photo slideshows
  • Phone, tablet, and Android TV (remote / D-pad)
  • Optional built-in player for your own MP3/MP4 files

Detail: What is SongHub

Official source only

Public releases are on the SongHub-Android GitHub repository (developer jpdcs). Install from that Releases page or any channel the developer lists as official. Avoid third-party cloud “full packs” that sell the app with bundled song libraries — the developer has warned against those copies.

Setup steps: SongHub setup guide

Folder structure

Create a folder named SongHub on internal storage, SD card, or USB:

  • songs/ – .mid, .kar (optional .mp3)
  • sound/ – .sf2 soundfonts
  • bgv/ – background videos (.mp4, .mkv, .avi); subfolders e.g. Nature, Motion are optional
  • bgphoto/ – background images
  • videos/ and mp3s/ – media for the built-in player

MIDI, KAR and lyrics

MIDI (.mid) carries note and timing data. KAR files are MIDI plus lyric/text events so the app can show words on screen in time with the music. Without a suitable KAR (or embedded lyric data), you may get music only. Build or obtain files you are allowed to use; the app does not fetch commercial catalogues.

Background video and TV

Place videos in bgv/ (optionally in themed subfolders). On Android TV, navigation is designed for remote and D-pad. Performance depends on device and video resolution — shorter or lower-resolution clips are safer on older hardware.

Legal song files

  • Files you created
  • Public-domain or openly licensed MIDI/KAR
  • Collections bought from authorised sellers

Do not treat SongHub as a source of copyrighted commercial tracks. Prefer legitimate MIDI packs over random “full library” downloads.
